285. map development 6

Neglected by ADACRE & in the process of moving temporarily to Australia, I removed my map for sale from the internet. If they didn’t need the assistance, so be it. Their less than lukewarm response did little to encourage further correspondence. But I still wanted to get the word out about the highlights of Recoleta Cemetery. So in the midst of packing, I began making a master map which I could use for any future project that came to mind.

It involved returning to the cemetery… a lot. During the first half of 2008 I went through 10,000+ photos, matched corresponding tombs to their locations & documented everything possible. I also wanted to maintain this blog while in Australia & had to plan for that. My apartment looked like a map explosion for several weeks:

Most visits involved correcting info & fine-tuning the previous map. Counting pavement tiles, confirming angles & filming videos to mark exact locations may not be fun, but the end result was worth it:

Stay tuned for the next release: a 20-page PDF handbook with information about the cemetery’s history, the most interesting family vaults (approximately 70 in an easy-to-follow route), symbolism, & the complete story of Eva Perón’s post-mortem travels.

With an expected release of March 2009, the handbook will be the most complete guide to Recoleta Cemetery available to date. I can’t wait to put the finishing touches on it. Purchasing the PDF will be like taking this blog along with you or having a guided visit with zero time constraints. Not focusing as much on Argentine history, but the best experience short of hiring me personally 🙂

Read the complete story in the following posts titled “map development”: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5 & Part 7. Good news! The PDF guidebook is now available.

  1. Hey Holly –

Oops. My bad… too much walking the dog, making curry, feeding the cat & trying to update the blog at the same time. How domestic.

I’m back in BA in 2 weeks (yea!) but have a bit more work to do on the packet. If it’s urgent, let me know. You’ve got my email.

    Un beso!

  2. I’m not sure… 2 months, 3 months? It all depends on how much work I get in Spain & Portugal as well as if I can live over there for the remainder of the year. I’ll keep everyone posted though.

    Robert,

Sabiendo que retornabas, Macri mandó cambiar las veredas que circundan el cementerio y según mi media naranja están quedando muy lindas.

    See you soon…

  4. jajaja Somos muy amigos, Macri y yo. Ya era hora, no?

A ver si los restaurantes dejan de depositar su basura en las veredas del cementerio.

  5. Hi Robert
(Sally here, friend of Caroline – we met once!)
I was just looking for your maps (cemetery and domes) and how people can buy them!
I’m putting together a page on my blog of interesting/quality Buenos Aires reads for travellers and wanted to include your stuff.
The guide sounds fab. Any news on that?
Has LineofSight gone now? I got an error when I tried to find it.

Hope all went swimmingly for you in Oz and that it continues to do so.
    Beso, SC

    • Hey Sally –

Sure I remember you! Thanks for the enquiry… Things have been crazy lately.

Someone hacked into Line of Sight about one week ago, so I have to upload everything again. I honestly haven’t had the time to sit down & do it. Once I do, the dome map will be there for anyone to download for free.

The cemetery PDF is getting there. But I have so much work in Spain & Portugal this year that I don’t know when I can finish it. I’m leaving in about 10 days & I won’t be back until July! I’ll be doing a post about that soon. I’ll definitely send you a copy when it’s done though, so you & your friends can use it.

Hope things are well with you!

Hi Robert. We are two Israelis on Honeymoon in BA and were inspired by your thorogh investigations of the cemtery, and cant imagin going there without your map and guide. Is it available somewhere? Is the PDF? We will be in BA for the next couple of days, and would really like to experience the cemetery through your eyes.
    Thanks!!

    Avner and Ana

    • Hi Avner – I sent you a pre-release copy by email last night. It’s still rough around the edges, but hopefully it will be done by December. Have a great time in BA!

    • Hi Ann – Thanks for the comment. I’ve only just returned to BsAs & am setting up an apartment plus a new computer, but I managed to write this post about the PDF project. If you like, I can email a rough draft for you to use… the basic info is there but remember it’s rough 🙂 Let me know.
