He&#8217;s here because in 1910 de Pol married Asimilda del Valle&#8230; great-niece of politician <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=560\">Arist\u00f3bulo del Valle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Victor de Pol, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200911A05.jpg\" alt=\"Victor de Pol, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Born in Venice in 1865, Victor de Pol emigrated to Argentina in 1887 at the age of 22. Having already studied art in his home town, Florence &amp; Rome, de Pol won several awards &amp; was recommended personally by his last teacher, <a href=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/?p=5299\"><strong>Giulio Monteverde<\/strong><\/a>&#8230; responsible for the crucifixion statue in the cemetery chapel &amp; professor to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1011\"><strong>Dolores &#8220;Lola&#8221; Mora<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The city of La Plata &#8212;newly founded capital of the <em>Provincia de Buenos Aires<\/em>&#8212; hired de Pol to add a little beauty to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=609\">Pedro Benoit<\/a>&#8216;s elegant urban design. De Pol is responsible for figures on the <em>Palacio Legislativo<\/em>, a few reliefs, sculptures of the indigenous people held captive in the Natural History museum (!), busts of 12 important scientists &amp; the saber-toothed tigers guarding the museum entrance:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Museo, La Plata\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/MuseoLaPlata01.jpg\" alt=\"Museo, La Plata\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Museo, La Plata\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/MuseoLaPlata02.jpg\" alt=\"Museo, La Plata\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Museo, La Plata\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/MuseoLaPlata03.jpg\" alt=\"Museo, La Plata\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1104\">President Sarmiento<\/a> was still alive, de Pol had been invited to sculpt a bust &#8212;his official image of sorts. So when Sarmiento died in 1888, de Pol was also commissioned to design his tomb in Recoleta Cemetery, topped with a condor:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200911F13.jpg\" alt=\"Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">De Pol returned to Buenos Aires after a five-year stay in Europe &amp; opened a studio in what is now known as Galer\u00edas Pac\u00edfico. From there he designed works to be placed over the entire nation as well as the fantastic tomb of <strong>Archbishop Le\u00f3n Federico Aneiros<\/strong>, kneeling in prayer in the Catedral Metropolitana:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Catedral Metropolitana, Buenos Aires\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200911F22.jpg\" alt=\"Catedral Metropolitana, Buenos Aires\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Catedral Metropolitana, Buenos Aires\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200911F23.jpg\" alt=\"Catedral Metropolitana, Buenos Aires\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Victor de Pol&#8217;s most important work is admired by thousands of people daily, the <strong>quadriga <\/strong>placed top &amp; center on the National Congress. Traditionally used by Roman generals when entering a conquered city, the horse-drawn carriage takes on new meaning as Liberty holds the reins.
