Born in the province of Corrientes in 1817\u2014just after Argentina earned its independence\u2014much of Pujol&#8217;s life coincided with the new nation&#8217;s struggles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200711A56.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Recoleta Cemetery, Juan Gregorio Pujol\" width=\"297\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200804I16.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Recoleta Cemetery, Juan Gregorio Pujol\" width=\"336\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pujol graduated from the University of C\u00f3rdoba with a law degree in 1838. After returning to Corrientes, Pujol obtained various government positions until named Governor in 1852. He worked with Justo Jos\u00e9 de Urquiza &amp; Santiago Derqui to write a constitution that would be acceptable to Buenos Aires&#8230; always seen as problematic due to the region&#8217;s overwhelming economic power. Pujol did much to promote education &amp; favor local trade in Corrientes, including aligning the province with Paraguay&#8217;s dictator, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=258\">Francisco Solano L\u00f3pez<\/a>. Anything to avoid siding with Buenos Aires! In the end, Pujol had severe disagreements with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=161\">Carlos Tejedor<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=146\">Bartolom\u00e9 Mitre<\/a> &amp; foresaw the coming civil war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200804I14.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Recoleta Cemetery, Juan Gregorio Pujol\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pujol died in August 1861, still serving as Governor of Corrientes &amp; one month before the Battle of Pav\u00f3n ended the <strong>Confederaci\u00f3n Argentina<\/strong> which he had supported &amp; served his entire life.
