One of the plaques clarifies his contribution to <em>porte\u00f1o<\/em> society: founder of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.protectorasarmiento.org.ar\">Sarmiento Animal Protection Society<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200804E10.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 P\u00e9rez Mendoza, Recoleta Cemeter\" title=\"Jos\u00e9 P\u00e9rez Mendoza, Recoleta Cemetery\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Named after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1104\">President Sarmiento<\/a> who supported the first animal rights laws in Argentina, the 1902 society began to care for abandoned &amp; overworked animals. Located on the <strong>600 block of Santiago del Estero<\/strong>, the building is surprisingly still standing&#8230; and still operating. The ground floor has been completely altered &amp; now houses a mini-market\/garage while the upper floor seems to house the office portion:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/sarmientoanimal.jpg\" alt=\"Sociedad Protectora de Animales Sarmiento\" title=\"Sociedad Protectora de Animales Sarmiento\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200712B21.jpg\" alt=\"Sociedad Protectora de Animales Sarmiento\" title=\"Sociedad Protectora de Animales Sarmiento\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They offer basic services such as education, adoption, spaying, neutering &amp; often collaborate with the School of Veterinary Sciences in the neighborhood of Agronom\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update (01 Jan 2025):<\/strong> The Archivo General de la Naci\u00f3n recently posted a video from 1957 with the animal protection society still working!
