His father, born in Baltimore of German immigrants, represented the city of Bremen in Uruguay. Ernesto&#8217;s mother, a <em>porte\u00f1a<\/em>, passed away in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=3184\">yellow fever epidemic of 1871<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The following year Tornquist married his niece &amp; they had a numerous family of 14 children. His brother-in-law first introduced Ernesto to management, &amp; he eventually acquired enough shares &amp; confidence to inherit the company. It provided the capital necessary to open a sugar refinery in Rosario, the Bieckert brewery, a ceramic manufacturing plant, metalworking facility&#8230; even a margarine factory. Diversity seemed to be Tornquist&#8217;s strong point, &amp; his fortune grew accordingly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200711A33.jpg\" alt=\"Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Ernesto Tornquist\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A close friendship with both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=3053\">Julio Argentino Roca<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=2880\">Carlos Pellegrini<\/a> likely helped Tornquist influence political decisions&#8230; or at least know what would happen before anyone else. Some historians have hinted that he may have even inspired Roca to take on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=196\">Conquista del Desierto<\/a> in order to acquire land. What is certain is that after the removal of indigenous tribes, Tornquist bought thousands of hectares of confiscated land &amp; established colonies for German immigrants. This <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com.ar\/maps?client=safari&amp;q=partido+tornquist&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=0x95ec4484c481a915:0xd770d41a7753697a,Tornquist+Partido+-+Buenos+Aires+Province&amp;gl=ar&amp;ei=SGD_UdXfEuiGjAKXy4CIAQ&amp;ved=0CJoBELYD\">large area<\/a> just north of Bah\u00eda Blanca still bears his name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200711A38.jpg\" alt=\"Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Ernesto Tornquist\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200711A34.jpg\" alt=\"Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Ernesto Tornquist, lion\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tornquist built several visible reminders of his wealth in Buenos Aires, most notably the <strong>Plaza Hotel<\/strong>&#8212;today the Marriott&#8212;on Plaza San Mart\u00edn. In the heart of the banking district, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1726\">Alejandro Bustillo<\/a> designed the Banco Tornquist in 1928. As of 2000, <strong>Banco Tornquist<\/strong> had been absorbed by Banco Santander R\u00edo &amp; the building has remained closed to the public since then. Plans to house the yearly interior design fair (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.casafoa.com\/mercado_del_diseno.html\">Casa FOA<\/a>) there in 2013 will provide a unique opportunity to view the bank&#8217;s interior. Ornamental figures above the entrance were sculpted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=66\">Troiano Troiani<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200501D23.jpg\" alt=\"Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, La City, Banco Tornquist\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200501D22.jpg\" alt=\"Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, La City, Banco Tornquist\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tornquist passed away in 1908 in Buenos Aires.
