But surprisingly few burial sites for major architects are known today. Perhaps they shared a similar fate as that of Julio Dormal&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Born in 1846 in Li\u00e8ge (Belgium), <strong>Jules Dormal Godet<\/strong> arrived in Argentina after studying architecture in Paris. Early business deals failed but after settling in Buenos Aires in 1870, Dormal&#8217;s timing &amp; contacts could not have been better. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1104\">Sarmiento<\/a> hired him to design a new park&#8212;Parque 3 de Febrero&#8212;previously occupied by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.endlessmile.com\/buenos-aires-los-terrenos-de-rosas\/\">the estate<\/a> of the President&#8217;s arch-enemy, <strong>Juan Manuel de Rosas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many more projects followed.\u00a0In fact, Dormal was responsible for several landmarks still visible today in Buenos Aires. He designed the tomb to house <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=256\">the remains of General San Mart\u00edn<\/a> inside the cathedral (top photo above). After the assassination of architect Victor Meano, he continued construction of the <strong>National Congress:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/201211C15.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Congreso Nacional\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meano also left the <strong>Teatro Col\u00f3n<\/strong> incomplete, so Dormal took over as well &amp; designed much of the interior:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/201210A27.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Teatro Col\u00f3n\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/201211D24.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Teatro Col\u00f3n, Jules Dormal\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/201211D26.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Teatro Col\u00f3n, Jules Dormal\" width=\"337\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In following years, Dormal completed or executed from start to finish many of the aristocratic mansions in the northern sector of the city. The <strong>Palacio Pereda<\/strong> now houses the Brazilian embassy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/201208F31.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Palacio Pereda\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately many of those grand houses have since been demolished. But the residence for <strong>Julio Pe\u00f1a<\/strong> still stands on Calle Florida, now occupied by the Sociedad Rural Argentina. Non-members can get a peek at the luxury inside by going for lunch at the restaurant:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/201210Fbb.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Palacio Julio Pe\u00f1a, Sociedad Rural Argentina, Julio Dormal\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/201210Faa.jpg\" alt=\"Buenos Aires, Palacio Julio Pe\u00f1a, Sociedad Rural Argentina, Julio Dormal\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not limited to only Buenos Aires, Dormal also built several notable structures in other cities. Perhaps his most emblematic work outside the capital is the very <em>afrancesado<\/em> <strong>Casa de Gobierno<\/strong> in La Plata:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/CasaGobMar01.jpg\" alt=\"La Plata, Casa de Gobierno, Julio Dormal\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/CasaGobMar02.jpg\" alt=\"La Plata, Casa de Gobierno, Julio Dormal\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/CasaGobMar03.jpg\" alt=\"La Plata, Casa de Gobierno, Julio Dormal\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dormal passed away in 1924 &amp; was buried in Recoleta Cemetery inside the mausoleum belonging to his second wife, <strong>Elena Sosa D\u00edaz<\/strong>. But his remains were cremated in 1989 and, according to cemetery records, were likely placed inside the <strong>Dolmas Ar\u00e9valo<\/strong> vault. Why? No one knows.
