German Protestants had the same difficulty as other non-Catholic immigrant groups in finding a suitable place for burials. Hungarian architect <strong>Juan Kronfuss<\/strong> designed the entrance in 1926, &amp; the chapel contains extraordinary stained glass windows from <strong>Franz Mayer<\/strong> in Munich. The greenery &amp; perfectly manicured plots make for a nice break from the hectic vibe of Chacarita.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, chapel\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200701C51.jpg\" alt=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, chapel\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, chapel\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200701C64.jpg\" alt=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, chapel\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of its most famous graves belongs to <strong>Capt. Hans Wilhelm Langsdorff<\/strong>, commander of the armored vessel <em>Admiral Graf Spee<\/em>. Damaged in the 1939 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_the_River_Plate\">Battle of the River Plate<\/a> off the coast of Montevideo, Langsdorff scuttled the ship &amp; his crew were taken prisoner. Transferred to Buenos Aires, Langsdorff committed suicide two days later. Some of the crew passed away\u2014waiting out the end of the war in either Argentina or Uruguay\u2014&amp; are also buried here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, Graf Spee crew\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200701C63.jpg\" alt=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, Graf Spee crew\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, Capt Hans Langdorff\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200701C61.jpg\" alt=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, Capt Hans Langdorff\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, Graf Spee crew\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200701C62.jpg\" alt=\"Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, Graf Spee crew\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The crew of the <em>Graf Spee<\/em> are not the only Nazis interred there. <strong>Rodolfo Freude<\/strong> formed part of Per\u00f3n&#8217;s secret service &amp; is thought to have been one of the organizers behind ODESSA. He died in 2003, &amp; the full story of bringing Nazis &amp; Nazi wealth into Argentina may have died with him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other notable figures: Swimmer <strong>Jeanette Campbell<\/strong> was the first Argentine to win an Olympic medal&#8230; ironically at the 1936 Berlin games. Photographer <strong>Annemarie Heinrich<\/strong> took some of the most well-known portraits of celebrities &amp; politicians, including my favorite images of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.endlessmile.com\/repost-no-soy-muy-tanguero\/\">Tita Merello<\/a> &amp; Eva Per\u00f3n:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Eva Per\u00f3n by Annemarie Heinrich\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/heinricheva.jpg\" alt=\"Eva Per\u00f3n by Annemarie Heinrich\" width=\"303\" height=\"auto\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Tita Merello by Annemarie Heinrich\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/heinrichtita.jpg\" alt=\"Tita Merello by Annemarie Heinrich\" width=\"303\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Architect <strong>Carlos (Karl) Nordmann<\/strong> designed the Legislature of the city of La Plata, along with its museum &amp; other fine works throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Legislatura, La Plata, Carlos Nordmann\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/legislaplata.jpg\" alt=\"Legislatura, La Plata, Carlos Nordmann\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"La Plata, museo, Karl Nordmann\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200902F11.jpg\" alt=\"La Plata, museo, Karl Nordmann\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Alexander Asboth<\/strong>, a Hungarian immigrant to the USA, commanded Union troops during the Civil War. He later became US ambassador to Argentina &amp; Uruguay, dying in Buenos Aires. Asboth was initially buried in the Cementerio Alem\u00e1n, but his remains were transferred to Arlington National Cemetery in 1990.
