His parents &amp; relatives had property near Buenos Aires, so he spent most of his childhood in the big city. At the age of 9, his mother passed away. Diagnosed with respiratory problems, doctors recommended a change of climate for Hern\u00e1ndez. He went to live with his father who ran ranches for <strong>Juan Manuel de Rosas<\/strong>&#8230; a great opportunity to learn the <em>gaucho<\/em> lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hern\u00e1ndez began a military career in the 1850s. On &amp; off, he participated in many of the decisive battles to determine if Buenos Aires would become the capital of Argentina. But a career in journalism lured Hern\u00e1ndez away from the military. Already an established member of the literary community, his greatest work began to be published in 1872 as a newspaper series under the title &#8220;<em><strong>Mart\u00edn Fierro<\/strong><\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200902E10.jpg\" alt=\"Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Combining gaucho folklore &amp; romantic imagery, <em>Mart\u00edn Fierro<\/em> became immediately popular for its authentic tone, first-person narrative &amp; innovative use of language. The work became a fundamental piece of Argentine identity &amp; by the time of its <strong>11th edition<\/strong> in 1879, Hern\u00e1ndez penned a popular sequel titled &#8220;<em>La Vuelta de Mart\u00edn Fierro<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez passed away in 1886. <em>Mart\u00edn Fierro<\/em> has been adapted in many formats since then, &amp; many Argentines continue to identify with this classic piece of literature. Both texts can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/electroneubio.secyt.gov.ar\/Jose_Hernandez_Martin_Fierro_Ida_y_vuelta.pdf\">here<\/a>, &amp; it is often presented in comic format for a younger audience:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez, Mart\u00edn Fierro\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/martinfierro.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez, Mart\u00edn Fierro\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite his contribution to national identity, the tomb of Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez is rarely visited these days.
