The Latin inscription doesn&#8217;t help much&#8230; &#8220;In te Domine speravimus&#8221; is a modified phrase from the hymn <em>Te Deum<\/em> meaning &#8220;Lord, in thee we have trusted.&#8221; Fortunately a single plaque gives away his full name, so the BH must stand for <strong>Bencich Hermanos<\/strong>&#8212;real estate investors &amp; constructors who gave Buenos Aires some of its most iconic buildings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Massimiliano Bencich, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200806B22.jpg\" alt=\"Massimiliano Bencich, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Born in Trieste (northeastern Italy) in 1885, Massimiliano arrived in Buenos Aires in 1910&#8230; one year after his brother, <strong>Miguel Juan Mar\u00eda Bencich<\/strong>. Massimiliano was three years older than Miguel but the younger sibling seemed to be the more enterprising of the pair. Miguel had experience with construction, so the brothers joined forces during the boom years of Buenos Aires. Forming Bencich Hermanos in 1915, they constructed office space &amp; apartments for decades. One of their most recognizable buildings is on Diagonal Norte, one block from Plaza de Mayo. The second photo below was taken during restoration of the domes in 2007:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Bencich Hermanos, Diagonal Norte\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200608B33.jpg\" alt=\"Bencich Hermanos, Diagonal Norte\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Bencich Hermanos, Diagonal Norte\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200701I22.jpg\" alt=\"Bencich Hermanos, Diagonal Norte\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another high-rise at Arroyo 841 was purchased &amp; renovated by the Sofitel hotel chain in 2002&#8230; as seen from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=155\">Edificio Kavanagh<\/a> &amp; looking up from the main entrance:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Bencich Hermanos, Sofitel\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200803F26.jpg\" alt=\"Bencich Hermanos, Sofitel\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Bencich Hermanos, Sofitel\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200708D79.jpg\" alt=\"Bencich Hermanos, Sofitel\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another sits majestically on the 800 block of Avenida C\u00f3rdoba &amp; Alfonsina Storni was its most famous resident:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Bencich Hermanos, Avenida C\u00f3rdoba\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200708D55.jpg\" alt=\"Bencich Hermanos, Avenida C\u00f3rdoba\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Bencich Hermanos, Avenida C\u00f3rdoba\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200807F01.jpg\" alt=\"Bencich Hermanos, Avenida C\u00f3rdoba\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several other Bencich buildings grace the BA skyline with their interesting domes. Not to be outdone, the tomb in Recoleta Cemetery has an equally beautiful stained glass, onion-shaped dome:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Massimiliano Bencich, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200711A18.jpg\" alt=\"Massimiliano Bencich, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A massive, marble casket rests inside:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Massimiliano Bencich, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200805D27.jpg\" alt=\"Massimiliano Bencich, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miguel passed away in 1965 &amp; Massimiliano followed soon after in 1972. But only the elder brother is currently buried here&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=3012\">Miguel Bencich<\/a>\u00a0can be found in a tomb near <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=14\">Rufina Cambac\u00e9r\u00e8s<\/a>.
