Tourists line up. They are anxious because the guided tour is about to begin. A route through passageways, vaults &amp; tombs. A walk through Argentine history via Recoleta Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The scene repeats itself every week. According to official statistics from the city government, some <strong>24,000 tourists<\/strong> visited the oldest necropolis in the city of Buenos Aires in 2008 alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Is it a fascination with death? Author <strong>Mar\u00eda Rosa Lojo<\/strong> maintained: \u201cWithout doubt, death is the great mystery of our lives. Those figures found in tombstones, in tombs, represent us. They are our past but also our future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recoleta Cemetery was the first public necropolis in the city of Buenos Aires. It was inaugurated with the name <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=635\">Northern Cemetery<\/a> on November 17, 1822. One day later, the first people buried were a slave child, Juan Benito, and a woman named Mar\u00eda Dolores Maciel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Afterwards the cemetery in Flores was built in 1867 &amp; another in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=3186\">Chacarita<\/a> in 1871.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Guided visits consist of groups of 25-30 people, depending on the day &amp; time. There are also organized school visits every week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the city government webpage, cemetery plans were designed by the engineer <strong>Pr\u00f3spero Catelin<\/strong>, with the government reserving some plots for outstanding citizens of the nation. This act gave the cemetery its historical character.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But what is it that attracts Argentine &amp; foreign tourists? What do visitors to the cemetery look for when they wander through its tombs &amp; vaults?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe founding history of the country, the first history, is found in the cemetery,\u201d explained <strong>Carlos Francavilla<\/strong>, the necropolis director.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the cemetery\u2019s tombs &amp; vaults lie historic figures of Argentina like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1104\">Domingo Faustino Sarmiento<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=146\">Bartolom\u00e9 Mitre<\/a>, Hip\u00f3lito Yrigoyen, Juan Manuel de Rosas, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=157\">Remedios de Escalada de San Mart\u00edn<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=200\">Eva Duarte de Per\u00f3n<\/a> y <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=948\">Ra\u00fal Alfons\u00edn<\/a>, whose burial last April 2nd, was witnessed by a multitude of moved people filling the cemetery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not only are there political personalities buried in Recoleta Cemetery, but also Nobel Prize winner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1724\">Luis Federico Leloir<\/a>, boxer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=111\">Luis Angel [Firpo]<\/a>, writers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=3540\">Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a>, Miguel Can\u00e9 &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=853\">Marcos Sastre<\/a>. Also there is a vault where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=248\">Mar\u00eda Marta Garc\u00eda Belsunce<\/a> lies, assassinated in October 2002 in her country house in Carmel.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>A YouTube video originally appeared in the article but has since been removed from the newspaper&#8217;s server.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is one vault which attracts Argentine tourists &amp; foreigners like a magnet, especially everyone who comes from Europe. It is the vault of Evita.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe tourist has a special interest in Evita\u2019s vault. She is a very internationally recognized character, very popular. There are tourists who know many details of Eva Duarte\u2019s life, mainly due to the musical,\u201d claimed Francavilla.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The current area [of the cemetery] is 5.5 hectares &amp; its limits are the streets of Jun\u00edn, Quintana, Vicente L\u00f3pez &amp; Azcu\u00e9naga. Visits are not only popular to discover those who are buried inside. It is an attraction for its architecture, expressed in distinct sculptural styles. Some 70 vaults were declared <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?page_id=164\">National Historic Monuments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe cemetery&#8217;s sculptural richness gets the tourist&#8217;s attention, so much so that they compare it with other important necropolises in the world such as the P\u00e8re-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris or the Italian necropolis of Staglieno in Genoa,\u201d added Francavilla.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently, according to official information, Recoleta Cemetery does not have lot space available. Vaults were granted for eternity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The city\u2019s Ministry of Public Space said: \u201cIn this moment we are currently in the process of vacating a gallery of niches which were rented for 95 years. All paperwork &amp; admin procedures for those niches which have been abandoned or unclaimed is complete. This way, the city will once again offer niches in its oldest cemetery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the rate table, 48 pesos per square meter are charged for vault maintenance per year. For enlargement of vaults, mandatory alignment with the cemetery&#8217;s layout, acquistion of vacant spaces or permission to construct underneath walkways, the charge is 84 pesos per square meter per year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">End of visit. After wandering through pathways, discovering tombs &amp; vaults, tourists are satisfied. Especially with such a large group working on a single piece.
