One of many Spanish business ventures in their former colonies, the bank began operating in 1887 as Argentina&#8217;s economy picked up steam &amp; it quickly became the largest private institution in the nation. The main branch in Buenos Aires elegantly sat a couple blocks from Plaza de Mayo in La City on the corner of Reconquista &amp; Per\u00f3n:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Banco Espa\u00f1ol del R\u00edo de la Plata\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/bancoesprioplata.jpg\" alt=\"Banco Espa\u00f1ol del R\u00edo de la Plata\" width=\"450\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After a Menem-era bank buyout left the building abandoned, <strong>Banco Galicia<\/strong> purchased the lot for their massive, skyscraper headquarters. Completely out of place &amp; towering over everything in the vicinity, at least they had the decency to save the two street-side fa\u00e7ades:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Banco Galicia, La City\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200807E65.jpg\" alt=\"Banco Galicia, La City\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Banco Galicia, La City\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200807E68.jpg\" alt=\"Banco Galicia, La City\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main Spanish branch in Madrid was equally impressive, near the beginning of Gran V\u00eda on Calle Alcal\u00e1.
