An inscription on the back side made the search for background info easier:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Ram\u00f3n Sard\u00e1, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200801C19.jpg\" alt=\"Ram\u00f3n Sard\u00e0, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thanks to some helpful people at the Province of Santa Fe historical society, I learned that Ventura Coll was a doctor there, somewhere in the province&#8230; that&#8217;s all anyone knew about his life. But Ventura&#8217;s sister, Victoria Coll, married Joaqu\u00edn Marull &amp; had a daughter named Delfina. Delfina married Ram\u00f3n, so that&#8217;s how the Sard\u00e1 line also wound up in Recoleta Cemetery with the Colls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All these last names are Catal\u00e1n, &amp; Sard\u00e1 was also a doctor. Seems that Coll stuck to a tight social circle of Catalan immigrants. The historical society also provided me with a wonderful photo with Ventura Coll (left) &amp; Ram\u00f3n Sard\u00e1 (right). The bust on the grave is remarkably accurate:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Ventura Coll &amp; Ram\u00f3n Sard\u00e1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/collsarda.jpg\" alt=\"Ventura Coll &amp; Ram\u00f3n Sard\u00e1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Ventura Coll, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200802C13.jpg\" alt=\"Ventura Coll, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The statue of the boy angel may seem familiar to regular readers of this blog because the same statue also decorates the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=167\">Francisco G\u00f3mez family vault<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Ventura Coll, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200802C14.jpg\" alt=\"Ventura Coll, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Delfina &amp; Ram\u00f3n Sard\u00e1 had no children, so it&#8217;s interesting to note that they donated money to establish a maternity hospital in Buenos Aires. Opened in 1934 in the neighborhood of Parque Patricios, the building is textbook Art Deco &amp; one of the most important public hospitals in the city. With over 6,000 births per year, no wonder it was immortalized in the 1954 movie &#8220;<em>Mercado de Abasto<\/em>&#8221; with Tita Merello &amp; Pepe Arias:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Hospital Ram\u00f3n Sard\u00e1, Parque Patricios\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200503F41.jpg\" alt=\"Hospital Ram\u00f3n Sard\u00e1, Parque Patricios\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hidden among a series of short rows, Ventura Coll gets little attention these days &amp; even fewer people remember who he was.
