However, his lifetime service to Argentina in public office made him a well-known &amp; recognized figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Passing away in 1911, the Art Nouveau sculpture signed &#8220;Cardona&#8221; has been admired by many&#8230; if you can find it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update (December 2025):<\/strong> <strong>Graciela Blanco<\/strong> has done some fantastic research into the sculpture titled &#8220;Lo Dolor&#8221; in a 1914 edition of the art magazine &#8220;<em>Ilustraci\u00f3 Catalana<\/em>&#8221; (Year XII, N\u00ba 596) &amp; attributed to Joseph Cardona:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/IlustracioCatalana596-1914.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:450px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In 1909, Josep\/Joseph Cardona was already a prominent artist in the Catalan community as noted by a two-page feature in the same magazine (<em>Ilustraci\u00f3 Catalana<\/em>, Year VII, N\u00ba 314):<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/IlustracioCatalana314-1909a.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/IlustracioCatalana314-1909a.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:auto;height:500px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/IlustracioCatalana314-1909b.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/IlustracioCatalana314-1909b.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:auto;height:500px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In fact, praise of Cardona would continue even after sculpting the funeral monument for Marco Avellaneda (<em>La Ilustraci\u00f3n Art\u00edstica<\/em>, Year XXXI, N\u00ba 1572):<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/IlustracionArtistica1572-1912.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/images\/IlustracionArtistica1572-1912.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:auto;height:500px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Authors F\u00e1tima L\u00f3pez P\u00e9rez &amp; M. \u00c1ngles L\u00f3pez Piqueras state that Cardona lived in Argentina from 1909 to 1918 (with a brief stay in Barcelona during 1912-13) &amp; was warmly welcomed back to his homeland:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Returning from Argentina and after a few days in Madrid, the notable sculptor Joseph Cardona is in our city [\u2026] We give our cordial welcome to the artist, rejoicing in the triumphs achieved in America, which are ultimately triumphs for Catalonia.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Blanco notes that <strong>Juan Jos\u00e9 Cardona Morera<\/strong> &#8212;Josep Cardona&#8217;s nephew &amp; a sculptor as well&#8212; came to Buenos Aires &amp; lived with his uncle during the production of the funeral statue. So who was the artist? Uncle or nephew? It&#8217;s an odd puzzle with even official websites confusing the two artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we may never know for certain, I&#8217;m of the belief that the uncle (who was more established in 1911) was responsible for this beautiful artwork.
