He\u2019s without doubt the most important Argentine who ever lived as well as a key player in world history. San Mart\u00edn should be buried here alongside his parents (with the flag) &amp; his wife, Remedios de Escalada (small tomb on right). But he&#8217;s too important even for Recoleta Cemetery&#8230; more on him in a bit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A small plaque hidden in the bushes states that the parents&#8217; remains were moved to Yapey\u00fa in Corrientes province in February 1998. Their home was there, &amp; it was the birthplace of San Mart\u00edn. Another plaque explains that flag&#8212;a copy of the one San Mart\u00edn carried during battle&#8212;was made by one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=48\">Damas Patricias Argentinas<\/a>, descendants of Argentine founding fathers:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Padres del Libertador, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200803C05.jpg\" alt=\"Padres del Libertador, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Padres del Libertador,Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200803C04.jpg\" alt=\"Padres del Libertador, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Responsible for leading the armies that eliminated Spanish control in Argentine territory, San Mart\u00edn crossed the Andes Mountains on horseback with his troops &amp; freed Chile from the Spanish. Not stopping there, he continued north to Per\u00fa. San Mart\u00edn\u2019s leadership &amp; military skill gave three nations their independence. By the time fighting in South America was over in 1824, Remedios de Escalada had passed away from yellow fever. Their daughter, Mercedes, was cared for by her grandparents while San Mart\u00edn was on the other side of the continent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instead of resting on his laurels or taking charge, San Mart\u00edn returned to Buenos Aires &amp; immediately left with his daughter to Europe. Before setting sail, he bought a simple tombstone &amp; laid Remedios de Escalada to rest in Recoleta Cemetery&#8230; at that time only open for under two years. Her portrait decorates the adjoining wall:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Remedios de Escalada, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200803C36.jpg\" alt=\"Remedios de Escalada, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Remedios de Escalada, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200803C38.jpg\" alt=\"Remedios de Escalada, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Argentines thought San Mart\u00edn had abandoned them, &amp; many European nations refused to allow San Mart\u00edn to enter\u2026 after all, he was a revolutionary. Living in London, Brussels, &amp; eventually settling in Paris, San Mart\u00edn kept informed of events in South America but vowed never to use his sword again. He insisted that his fight was against the Spanish, &amp; internal conflicts were a big mistake between newly independent nations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A number of Argentine leaders visited him often in Europe, &amp; he attempted one voyage back to Argentina. But due to the conflict between Buenos Aires &amp; the rest of the nation, San Mart\u00edn disembarked in Uruguay instead. He would never return to Argentina, dying in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France in 1850.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">History almost forgot about San Mart\u00edn because of his absence. But the opponents of Rosas (namely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1104\">Sarmiento<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=146\">Mitre<\/a>) made sure that the contributions of San Mart\u00edn were remembered. His remains were finally repatriated to Argentina in 1877. San Mart\u00edn&#8217;s final resting place is inside the cathedral on Plaza de Mayo, protected by two guards of a regiment he created, the <em>Granaderos<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Jos\u00e9 de San Mart\u00edn, Recoleta Cemetery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/images\/200703E07.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 de San Mart\u00edn, Recoleta Cemetery\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone should know who \u201cThe Liberator\u201d refers to: Jos\u00e9 de San Mart\u00edn.
