Since its inception, the <strong>Comisi\u00f3n Nacional de Museos y Monumentos y Lugares Hist\u00f3ricos<\/strong> has singled out 89 tombs of noted personalities &amp; groups buried in Recoleta Cemetery, citing that it is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The unavoidable duty of the Argentine people to demonstrate their gratitude to those who, for their public or private activity, made possible the current greatness of the nation&#8230; obliging the national government to watch over the maintenance &amp; care of the sepulchers where their remains are kept.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What&#8217;s interesting is how many &amp; when certain tombs were chosen. Below is a complete list of the commission&#8217;s selection along with the official decree #\/year when each of the following tombs were chosen.<\/p>\n<p>The first two under Decreto 30.837\/45:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=560\">Arist\u00f3bulo <strong>del Valle<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/?p=4066\">Miguel Estanislao <strong>Soler<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Decreto 2.236\/46 added three more the following year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=4241\">Valent\u00edn <strong>Alsina<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Marcos <strong>Balcarce<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Dalmacio <strong>V\u00e9lez Sarfield<\/strong> (removed from this list in 1981 after the transfer of his remains to the Palacio de Justicia in C\u00f3rdoba)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Later in 1946, the largest number was added&#8230; his mausoleum would later hold the remains of <a href=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/?p=46\">Eduardo Lonardi<\/a>, added to this list in 1960, see below)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=6098\">Juan Mart\u00edn de <strong>Pueyrred\u00f3n<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Jos\u00e9 M. <strong>Piran<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=5323\">Juan <strong>Pujol<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=2977\">Guillermo <\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=2977\">Rawson<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=3053\">Julio Argentino <strong>Roca<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=635\">Mart\u00edn <strong>Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=193\">Nicol\u00e1s <strong>Rodr\u00edguez Pe\u00f1a<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Cornelio de <strong>Saavedra<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Antonio <strong>S\u00e1enz<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1701\">Mar\u00eda <strong>S\u00e1nchez de Mendeville<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1104\">Domingo Faustino <strong>Sarmiento<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=489\">Delfina <strong>Vedia de Mitre<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Juan Jos\u00e9 <strong>Viamonte<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few more stragglers from the same year under Decreto 12.086\/46:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=33\"> Pedro Jos\u00e9 <strong>D\u00edaz<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=800\">Wenceslao <strong>Paunero<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=489\">Emilio <strong>Mitre<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Jos\u00e9 <strong>de Olavarr\u00eda<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=662\">Isidoro <strong>Su\u00e1rez<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=410\"> Francisco <strong>Mu\u00f1iz<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Jos\u00e9 Manuel <strong>de Estrada<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=221\"> Juan Florencio <strong>Terrada<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only one tomb was added the following year under Decreto 34.033\/47:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Francisco <strong>Segu\u00ed<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And one more in 1951 under Decreto 15.090\/51:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pedro Alc\u00e1ntara <strong>de Somellera<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the Per\u00f3n years, evidently there were priorities other than national heritage. In the 1960s only eight tombs were added to the list. The first is the most surprising since Lonardi led the revolution against Per\u00f3n &amp; Lonardi&#8217;s tomb was listed only four years after his death. The minimum wait is typically 50 years to qualify for the list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The law (not a decree in the following two cases) also states that the government will pay <em>one million pesos<\/em> for tomb upkeep. In 1960 U$S 1 = 83 pesos, so that&#8217;s over U$S 12,000&#8230; doesn&#8217;t seem like much but adjusting for inflation, that would be over U$D 80,000 today!<\/p>\n<p>Ley 15.451 in 1960:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=46\"> Eduardo <strong>Lonardi<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ley 15.454 also in 1960 granted <em>2 million pesos<\/em> for this tomb:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=4141\"><strong> Ca\u00eddos en la Revoluci\u00f3n del 1890<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Decreto 1.259\/62 added the first for 1962:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Martiniano <strong>Leguizam\u00f3n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Decreto 5.407\/62 paid homage to Navy personnel, adding four:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Erasmo <strong>Obligado<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Alejandro <strong>Murature<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Jos\u00e9 <strong>Murature<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Luis <strong>Piedrabuena<\/strong> (removed from this list after the transfer of his remains to Carmen de Patagones)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Decreto 5.485\/64 added one more very important person:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=2880\"> Carlos <\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=2880\">Pellegrini<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ten years would pass before any further additions. Decreto 649\/1974 added only:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Donato <strong>\u00c1lvarez<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several were added during the last military dictatorship. All additions were made individually from then to the present day. In other words, one tomb per decree. Of note is the addition on 26 July 1983 of the tomb of Luis Vernet, first governor of the Falkland Islands&#8230; a little over one year after Argentina lost the war.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/recoletacemetery.com\/?p=6758\">Jordan Czeslaw <strong>Wysocki<\/strong><\/a>, Decreto 2371\/1976<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1720\"> Salvador Mar\u00eda <\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=1720\">del Carril<\/a><\/strong>, Decreto 1022\/1979<\/li>\n<li>Ambrosio Pl\u00e1cido <strong>Lezica<\/strong>, Decreto 1327\/1979<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=120\"> Ram\u00f3n <strong>Falc\u00f3n<\/strong><\/a>, Decreto 1809\/1981<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=344\"> Emma Nicolay <strong>de Caprile<\/strong><\/a>, Decreto 508\/1982<\/li>\n<li>Jos\u00e9 Antonio <strong>Terry<\/strong>, Decreto 1117\/1982<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=170\">Luis <strong>Vernet<\/strong><\/a>, Decreto 1867\/1983<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=609\">Pedro <strong>Benoit<\/strong><\/a>, Decreto 2317\/1983<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=258\"><strong>Guerreros del Paraguay<\/strong><\/a>, Decreto 2464\/1983<\/li>\n<li>F\u00e9lix <strong>Benavides<\/strong>, Decreto 2465\/1983<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of notable absence is a lack of heritage activity after democracy was restored in December 1983. No tombs in Recoleta Cemetery were added to the list during the governments of Alfons\u00edn or Menem, nor following the economic crisis of 2001. Only during the last year of N\u00e9stor Kirchner&#8217;s term were two tombs added:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Benjam\u00edn <strong>Paz<\/strong>, Decreto 124\/2007<\/li>\n<li>Marcos <strong>Paz<\/strong>, Decreto 125\/2007<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last but not least, the <strong>entrance gates<\/strong>\u00a0of all three major cemeteries in Buenos Aires &#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=190\">Recoleta<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=3186\">Chacarita<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=3188\">San Jos\u00e9 de Flores<\/a>&#8212; were listed as national heritage (Decreto 1289\/2007). Although this is an extensive list, we feel many other vaults should be added either based on historical or architectural value. Regardless of political differences, Eva Per\u00f3n should definitely be on the list. New additions will continue to be posted below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Update (30 Dec 2011):<\/strong> The crypt of President <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recoletacemetery.com\/?p=235\">Roque <strong>S\u00e1enz Pe\u00f1a<\/strong><\/a> was declared a national historic monument in November 2011 (Decreto PEN N\u00ba 1425\/11).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As of 1940, a commission under the Secretary of Culture began to identify &amp; catalog the nation&#8217;s heritage.
